Safer then...

While talking with parents of young children one area that caused the most discussion was the 'it was much safer in my childhood'. I don't buy into this at all, when i was only just into double figures years old, the world was my playground. I lived on the edge of acres of fields, woods and streams, within the dangerous reach of canals rivers and railways, and i would spend all day alone or with friends getting dirty with nature. Often camping out over night for the summer nights. People didn't think twice, although it took longer to convince my mother! But i'm sure bad things still happened but we just didn't hear about it... I'm sure levels of reported crimes may have gone up but i'd argue the actual events have, if you used to leave your doors unlocked in those days you'd hardly moan about being robbed if it's all down to your trusting nature! I'd say we were just less scared in those day's. Does that mean i'm going to let my son have the same freedom, hell no!
